Privacy Policy

Who We Are
Code For Dharma is a volunteer community that builds technology to serve Dharma, temples, Sanskrit, education, and cultural preservation. It is an initiative of Mayash Foundation, which is responsible for the personal data described in this policy.
This policy explains what information we collect when you use our website or contact us, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible.
This website may be shown in other languages for convenience. If a translation differs from the English text, the English text prevails.
Information We Collect
No Accounts
Our website has no user accounts or logins, and we do not ask you to register.
Contact Form and WhatsApp
Our contact form does not send or store anything on this website. When you submit it, the details you typed open in WhatsApp as a message you can review before sending. If you send it, we receive your message and your WhatsApp phone number. WhatsApp's own privacy policy applies to that conversation.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message.
Analytics (Only With Your Consent)
If you accept analytics cookies, we collect usage information through PostHog:
- Pages visited and how you move between them
- Use of key features: project filters, project links, the WhatsApp button and contact form submissions (the inquiry type only, never what you typed)
- Browser, device type and operating system
- Approximate location (country or city) derived from your IP
- Technical error reports when something breaks on the site
If you decline, none of this is collected.
Contributions to Projects
If you contribute to a project, your contributions and the profile details you choose to show on platforms such as GitHub are handled on those platforms under their own policies.
Cookies and Analytics
We use PostHog for website analytics and error tracking, hosted on PostHog's EU servers. PostHog sets cookies and local storage only after you click "Accept" in our cookie banner. Until then, and if you decline, no analytics cookies are set; we only remember your choice in your browser so we do not ask again.
You can change your choice at any time with the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of every page. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
If your browser supports it, this site saves copies of the pages you visit on your device so they open without a connection. These copies stay in your browser, are not sent to us, and contain no personal information.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information only to:
- Reply to your messages and questions
- Coordinate community participation and project collaboration
- Understand how the website is used and improve it
- Find and fix technical problems
- Keep the website secure and prevent misuse
Information Sharing
Public Contributions
Contributions to open-source projects (code, documentation, discussions) are publicly visible and credited to you by name. Contributions to closed-source projects are shared only with that project's team and partners.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share it only:
- With your consent
- When the law requires it
- To protect the rights and safety of our community
- With the service providers listed below, only as needed to run the website
Third-Party Services
- Vercel: Website hosting and delivery
- PostHog: Website analytics and error tracking (EU servers, only with your consent)
- WhatsApp: Conversations you start through our contact form or WhatsApp button
- GitHub: Code hosting and project collaboration
- Community chat platforms (such as Discord): If you choose to join our community channels
These services have their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to read.
How Long We Keep Information
- Messages (email and WhatsApp): kept while needed to respond and follow up, and deleted within 12 months of the last message unless they are needed for an ongoing project or the law requires us to keep them.
- Analytics data: kept for up to 12 months, then deleted. We look at it in aggregate rather than to identify individual visitors.
- Your cookie choice: stored in your browser until you change it or clear your browser data.
- Offline copies of pages: stored in your browser, deleted when the site is updated or when you clear your browser data.
- Contribution records: kept for as long as the project exists, so that we can keep crediting contributors.
You can ask us to delete your information sooner at any time.
Data Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information. The website is served only over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Only authorised Mayash Foundation team members who need it to respond to you or to run the website can access your messages and analytics data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your Rights
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you have the right to:
- Access: Ask for a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how we use it
- Correction: Ask us to correct or complete inaccurate information
- Erasure: Ask us to delete your personal data, unless we must keep it by law. Public contributions to open-source projects may stay in the project's history
- Withdraw consent: Change your analytics choice at any time through "Cookie settings". This stops further collection from your browser
- Nominate: Name another person to exercise these rights on your behalf in case of death or incapacity
- Grievance redressal: Raise a complaint with us, and if you are not satisfied with our response, with the Data Protection Board of India
To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address below. We aim to respond within a few working days.
Children
Our website is meant for a general audience and does not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before contacting us, and choose "Decline" in the cookie banner unless they agree to analytics.
